The UAE National Meteorology Center reassures that land spouts in Ras Al Khaimah, although visually striking, pose minimal risks and are far less intense than tornadoes.

UAE National Meteorology Center Addresses Land Spouts

In the center of meteorology of the UAE, it was reported that dust storms, sometimes accompanied by strong winds, lift dust and sand high into the sky. The National Center of Meteorology of the UAE clarified that these phenomena, although visually impressive, are not as dangerous as they may seem, and should not be confused with tornadoes. Unlike tornadoes, which form from rotating updrafts within a thunderstorm, dust storms occur in the early stages of the development of a thunderstorm caused by the collision of two air masses with different physical properties.

The dust storm that appeared yesterday in the Hadera area in the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah attracted widespread attention due to the circulated videos and photographs. Due to their small sizes and low intensity, they are difficult to detect on radar, and the National Center of Meteorology often relies on reports from the public for the registration of their appearances.

The center assured residents that such phenomena are usually not regular and do not represent a serious threat to surrounding areas. This interaction, combined with vertical rotation at the surface, leads to less severe and short-lived weather phenomena.
